New Developments for Pulse Oximetry
MEDLAB medizinische Diagnosegeräte GmbH
Although a lot of companies are offering SpO2 monitors, most of them do not develop their own oximeters, but are using OEM technology: They buy a module from another source that internally samples, measures and calculates the SpO2- and pulse rates and transmits the calculated values to the host monitor. This monitor is then used to display the received values only.
Mr. Torsten Stademann, sales manager of Medlab GmbH in Karlsruhe, sees an increasing usage of these OEM modules: "Pulse oximeters are more and more used also in other medical devices that traditionally did not contain them, as an additional benefit to the user. Examples for this are ergometers or oxygen concentrators".
Medlab therefore introduces two new OEM pulse oximetry modules for different applications: "The PEARL100 module is optimized for signal sampling in difficult situations, as, for example, measurements on strongly moving neonatal babies or on low-perfused patients in shock state", says Mr. Stademann.
The second module, the so called MiniPEARL, is only 40x20mm sized and therefore is one of the smallest solutions available today.
Both PCBs are compatible, so that manufacturers can offer a product in two versions: a high-end device using the PEARL100 and another one with the MiniPEARL module for cost-sensitive applications. The product does not need to be adapted to do this, since both parts communicate with the host system using the same protocol.
The modules are clinically validated and conform to all relevant international standards.
The PEARL100 works with a high-performance, digital signal processor to be able to eliminate movement- and other artefacts. The module uses the "PEARL" algorithm for this, where "PEARL" stands for "Pulse Enhancement Artefact Rejection Logic", a Medlab development. The signals are sampled using a 24-Bit AD converter to make it possible to work on very low perfused patients.
Also the MiniPEARL uses a powerful 32-Bit ARM Controller and stands for a very attractively priced but still very reliable alternative in standard applications.
The PCBs are connected to the host over a serial- or a CAN-bus interface. A complete product line of innovative probes for pulse oximetry is also available.
