Turbines, wafers, chips - they can be coated with razor-thin films hence changing properties. Technologies for creating thin films have arrived in medicine, too.
News about thin films in medicine and an expert-interview about the developments of this branch in Europe are the topics in COMPAMED.de's Special.
They are a few micrometers thick at most, quite inert and resistant. A further advantage is that they are biocompatible. These are some of the reasons why amorphous carbon films are being used in medicine more and more often - now also as a coating for urological stents.

Unbelievably thin films cover surfaces and that way change material properties - this idea evolves into a key technology. COMPAMED.de spoke to Winfried Blau, professor for physics and ex-secretary of the European Society of Thin Films (EFDS), about targets of the complex branch, future markets in medicine and photovoltaic plants carried by camels.
