Turbines, wafers, chips - they can be coated with razor-thin films hence changing properties. Technologies for creating thin films have arrived in medicine, too.

They are a few micrometers thick at most, quite inert and resistant. A further advantage is that they are biocompatible. These are some of the reasons why amorphous carbon films are being used in medicine more and more often - now also as a coating for urological stents.
